Project 7 Reboot - Initial Thoughts

Phil

No, Patreon ToS requires you to follow through on your perks, which will be fully fulfilled as explained in the video. The goals are nice things to motivate people to pledge but aren't considered "rewards" like the perks are - it's not like Kickstarter where you're promising to deliver a product and have to with goal levels, but it is with perks.

Regardless, the $250 from July's is being redirected to August anyway (again, as explained in the video) so the money isn't being simply pocketed. I'm sure the usual drama-queens will be talking shit for years about this, but overall the Patrons should be happy that the goal levels are lower and easier to hit in August because of this.

Obviously the Patrons aren't happy since you're losing them.

Ultimately, some people will be disappointed/upset and move on, while others will understand. That's the way of life.

That being said, nobody's removed their pledge (yet) since the video went live, but I do expect some to. I'm a realist here.

Extremely disappointing, to say the very least. My full thoughts on the matter:

1. http://i.imgur.com/vATsoWW.jpg

My comment isn't visible on the video as some trigger is setting off the spam filter and putting my comments into spam.

That said, I still support Phil and his channel. I don't think he's a bad guy, but I'm disappointed with some of his patreon decisions this year. Project 7 being the big one.

You have every right to be disappointed, and quite honestly, I expected as much from those who were/are longtime fans and wanted to see the series resume/restart. I MYSELF am very disappointed. Like I said, I couldn't even f'ing sleep last night because I was so distraught over it.

I don't want to put out rushed crap. I wanted to work on this all Summer but circumstances didn't work out. You can yell "better time management" all you want but the fact is, I work 7 days a week, am already stressed out with balancing just the streams/gameplay/youtube/the new house/responsibilities and the like, and taking on Project 7 at this time isn't a good idea. I THOUGHT IT WOULD WORK OUT, I was wrong, and I apologize for it. Especially to people like you who have been longtime viewers and are upset. You have every right to be.

UPDATE: Also I just checked, your comment doesn't show up ANYWHERE for some reason. I didn't delete it and it's not in the spam filter. I think YouTube comments are perma-fucked at this point.

But Phil, let's be honest you are delaying a teaser trailer. No one expected you to have Project 7 done or even anything substantial at all anytime soon, especially with the hardcore gaming season coming up.

The majority of the games you have been playing are old titles, some out of no where like The Godfather. It just seems like every time you were supposed to set aside time to work on a simple teaser trailer you found ways to busy yourself.

And no, I'm not a detractor, I am very upset. I made this account today to be able to interact about this in a meaningful way.

I think KG's main point is that you stick to your very rigid schedule way too much, especially considering the type of work you do etc. You've cancelled gameplay streams for various reasons in the past; would it seriously kill your business to not play Metroid Prime for a couple of weeks? Not play Fallout: NV (again) for a week? On top of that, you constantly tweet about watching "marathons" of various TV series and the likes. Please understand that this sends out a terrible signal when you at the same time tell people that you simply "don't have time" to work on other stuff. I know it's basically your "off hours", but it sends the signal that you're not putting in the extra effort.. so why should people give you their hard earned money if you - in their eyes - aren't willing to work hard yourself?

I rarely agree with KG on anything, but I think he's spot on with that Youtube comment. There are some serious core problems with the way you go about things; your schedule etc. seems to be something that just happened at some point out of pure chance and you stuck with it. There's logic to streaming at peak viewing hours of course, but why is it always very specific hours? Why do you never play some games off stream and build up a backlog of videos so you could work on creative stuff while still releasing videos? The people who are donating money to you are working 40+ hour weeks ON TOP of watching your videos, playing games themselves and the likes. It takes as much time to watch your gameplay videos as it does for you to record them. I think that's a point you're often missing.

You say you never have time to do basically anything other than play games - how would anyone ever find the time to watch your videos if they had that mentality?

Putting out "just a trailer" is impossible because you need to have actual footage FROM THE SHOW to make a trailer. I didn't make any Project 7 trailers from the 2012 series until the episodes were actually done - or else you're misrepresenting the show if you show something that doesn't make the cut. I.E. I can't make a trailer for something that doesn't exist yet, and to suggest I can is pretty silly.

Yeah, no, I'm not having the "you should work even more than you do now" argument because we've been there, done that. I stream 7 days a week, work doing YouTube/social media/other stuff outside of that, plus maintain a house, etc. and I need a least a couple hours of down time a day to continue to put out quality product. Nobody who thinks about this logically is going to say otherwise, people are just angry right now because they really wanted to see the return of Project 7. And I've only said it about 1 million times - this is a BUSINESS, and a day I don't work is a day I don't pay my bills. I don't have the luxury of taking time off from streaming/uploading, and I don't have this amazing surplus of free time hours that everyone seems to think I do.

The problem here isn't time management at all, it's that this summer ended up being an anomaly that I didn't plan for with the amount of releases taking up tons of time and the constant demand for me to be doing more. I shouldn't have mentioned working on Project 7 UNTIL the Summer schedule started, and I would have seen that there wasn't enough time to take on what I'd been thinking of doing. Instead I got everyone's hopes up and AT LEAST I feel I had the balls to make the right decision.

I'll take the flak for getting your hopes up and not coming through, but I won't be listening to people who aren't me again try to lecture me about my worth ethic, schedule, or needing down time.

"The people who are donating money to you are working 40+ hour weeks ON TOP of watching your videos, playing games themselves and the likes." Yes, and their downtime relaxation is watching my videos, just like my downtime relaxation is watching an hour or two of TV/movies every night. If people didn't have downtime that would mean......I never would be able to operate this business! Thanks for proving my point!

Phil, you had this day to work on your projects and you ditched them for that damn beta and "downtime" games prior to that. I suggest you cut off streaming because that is time-consuming and not mandatory, it's fanservice. And I don't see how you have responsibilities around the house when it's just you and Leanna living together plus those hamster in their cage.

I don't see the point of making an actual show if the show's fate was determined on the teaser. Like you said a week ago, if people like the teaser, you might continue P7; if they don't, you'll drop it.

I accept your apology, I know you're human just like everyone else here and set a goal that you couldn't fulfill. Even the SOK hasn't been able to fulfull their water charity goals to people so they are in the same boat and shouldn't be criticizing you so much. Someone sent me your IRC comments and I completely agree with you that I don't know how to run a youtube business, we both have very different jobs. I support military programs like F-35 and F/A18 along with NUCAS and other plane stuff you might be familiar with from your old plane job. However no matter what job or career, if you go to your customer or boss after 7 months and tell them you've made 0 progress on a project...that would not be good for you. I would be terminated in an instant in my shoes.

I agree, but the thing is, my job is to put out quality gaming content and entertain - not just make Project 7.

If I'd sat around doing nothing for 7 months, then I'd expect to be fired. But if you'd put out 7 months of hard work and THEN couldn't come through on something you'd only said you MAY be doing if you had time? Don't think you'd be getting fired for that.

UNRELATED: Yeah like I said, I'm not accepting any "criticism" from people who think they know me, my work schedule and "how time consuming it is to operate a YouTube business." If I had infinite time, I'd be working on Project 7, but life gets in the way. It's OKAY to be disappointed, but it's not okay to challenge my work ethic when I've put out 40k+ videos in 7 years, more than ANY OTHER YouTuber you watch. Nope.

NOTE: Anyone else who wants to turn this into "playing games on YouTube isn't work" can gladly be removed from the site along with the 3 others who've already insulted what I do in this thread. (BTW KGhaleon this is not in reference to you at all, but the site auto-fuses posts so it's gonna show up after my post to you).

Phil,

What i don't think you're understanding here is the larger issue at work. You say all the time that you are just one man and that is very true and you only have so much time in a day. With that being said one of the common complaints about you and your content is your constantly trying to do too much. Nobody sensible will criticize you for the drop-off in time you put into youtube over a few years ago due to changes in your life. But I feel you haven't really adjusted all too well to it either. You're still constantly trying to juggle almost every major game release which to a certain extent i get from a business perspective. And the results have sometimes been ugly for example that week in november last year where you tried to cover 6 Different games and was utter chaos. Now obviously from the business side there are games you are going to cover no matter what in the coming months but maybe you should start thinking about adjusting your work habits even more to your new lifestyle. You simply overwhelm yourself too much. The days where you could just spend 12+ hours a day doing stuff for youtube are over and us fans get that and have accepted it. It just seems to me at least you still haven't adjusted as well as perhaps you could. One of my suggestions would be figure out what games you absolutely are going to play no matter what like the call of duties assassin's creeds etc. and then prioritize the rest based on time constraints. You have started to do that a little bit this year already but its clear from your gaming schedule update that the fall is just gonna be phil is playing just about everything which again could pose some problems especially when you look at some of the games coming up that entail a huge time commitment like fallout.

In regards to Project 7, I remember being around in 2010 seeing those initial vids. And while i was excited for the potential long awaited return I had a sneaking suspicion something like this might happen. You don't have enough time to really juggle that with everything else you've been trying to do this summer. So yes i'm disappointed in it's postponement but im not surprised either. And please don't take any of this as a knock against you I am trying to be helpful and constructive here.

Also on a side note, I noticed after I posted this that i'm still labeled as a patron and have the forum benefits and such. Just to point this out because I'm an honest guy I haven't contributed to your patreon in at least 3 months due to my own financial constraints.

I was a huge fan of both versions of Project 7 and yeah it sucks it probably wont be happening anytime soon but to me its not something I hold against you or anyone. Youre busy streaming twice a day gaming. Even though it was a patreon goal i dont think people will be that upset as most donate because they just want to support you and the bonus are some perks. I think you could do a lot more fan interaction and a good way for that is to have people who payed the $75 mark be on a podcast and share their story as some sort of thank you and that they will still have a part in something else. Your fan appreciation stuff is some of the best things you do and it brings a lot of positivism toward you.  Don't sweat about project 7. theres always next summer and we all will still support you through that. Cant make everything work how you want all the time. Just dont let it get to you too much. Maybe do some sort of fan appreciation event for an old game or something to make up for it. Or use this time to finish Crash Bandicoot 2. i agree that you do way too much work and maybe could try some more vlog/podcast type videos to interact with fans more instead of gaming. Maybe instead of ask the king once a month you could do one once a week but make it like 45 min-1 hour or something. You need to relax more cause all this gaming is way too much stress on you.

This wasn't my point, at all. There's no doubt that you put a lot of hours into creating videos etc; my point was that the way you've scheduled your "work day", so to speak, is basically causing you to be "booked" for the entire day, every single day of the week. The fact that you have to take time off of work to shop for groceries and the likes underlines this point. It's always 2 streams: one long, and one shorter - Why not go an hour or two longer on the first (and most viewed) a couple of a times a week, ostensibly creating a more standardized work day for you and thus allowed you to get personal shit done and/or extra work stuff later in the day if need be? Wake up a couple of hours earlier 2/3 times a week - especially if a new popular game is out - and do a longer stream. Constantly have a "2nd stream" hanging over your head, basically extending your "working hours" through dinner and the likes as you're still in work mode, is killing any chance you have of doing interesting stuff besides just gameplay.

It's perfectly understandable when you say you don't have time if you take your schedule into account. How would you possibly ever get a creative spark and the likes when you have work hanging over your head ostensibly from 1PM to like 10PM?

Your free time could be from like 4PM till you go to bed. That time could be used to come up with ideas, work on other projects when you feel like it, do Patreon stuff, relax, go out to dinner, do your daily chores etc. With your current schedule you've got this weird 2-3 hour intermission between streams that isn't long enough to get anything proper done as you also need to eat, but it's long enough to make your work day basically take up the entire day.

Ok I understand this is your job, and you want to treat it as such, but what I don't understand is why you won't do anything unless it's convenient for you. I mean, I don't know anybody with a fan base like this that won't go just a little out of their way to please their fans. It could really be just as simple as setting your alarm for 9 am a couple of times a week so you work on Project 7. Yeah you're getting less sleep and yeah it's a personal sacrifice, but isn't it worth it when you know your fans would love it? It should be worth it just out of respect for the people who have been supporting you since you started. And at night, it's understandable that you want some relaxing time just like everybody else, but you're not like everybody else. You have obligations to your fans that you should fulfill, even if it's not convenient for you. You should say "You know, instead of watching this movie tonight, I think I'll work a little bit on Project 7 because I love and respect my fans for supporting my career for the past 5 years." If the only time you "care" about your fans is during "work hours", then there is some serious lack of respect on your part, and you need to fix that.

You will never have time to do it if you couldn't this summer.  There will always be old games people will want to watch you play.  It's also a lie when you say "a day I don't work is a day I don't pay my bills". The majority of the 2-3 million views you get per month are from your older videos. If you don't put up any videos on a particular day, you still make money.

I still think the main issue is you stream and upload too many videos, and focus too much on nonstop gaming. Nobody can watch the entire amount of content you put out weekly, So yes, you may be working hard playing as much stuff as you can, but your putting all that effort into doing something that is pointless for us.

It would be much smarter to stream a few hours per day, bank up a nice amount of videos and maybe release 1/3 of them each day.  Then, there is an incentive to watch your stream (getting the content sooner), and you also will have a bank of videos you can upload each day so you can work on other projects, or even relax and take a day off once in a while while still uploading new content.  I know this is different then what you have been doing for years, so it's probably to scary a change to make on a whim, but maybe you could beta test it for a week or two and see how your views compare to what they have been.

I work a desk job 40 hours a week, and still manage to stream for about 4hours per night, while editing and uploading youtube videos, managing my own social media, creating my own channel graphics, keeping up with my apartment, and I even work out 3 times per week.  Yeah, some days I don't get to unwind and veg out, but if you want to do something bad enough you will find a way to do it.  Good luck in the future Phil.

There are streamers EXACTLY like Phil who stream 10-12 hours per day, upload the stream to their YouTube and have a "mini" series. and a PodCast which is edited. All from one man. Personally when Phil made the original and 2010 re-boot of Project 7, he was at the busiest he was ever, since then he has cut down his hours/playing time.

Just want to make it clear that while I don't agree with the direction taken with Project 7, I in no way think that Phil's patreon is a scam like some people have been suggesting. Phil has certainly fulfilled most of his obligations to patrons such as shipping out T-shirts, recording special videos and providing forum access, indie marathons and patron playthroughs, montages, etc. There are a few exceptions like P7 and the final Minecraft stream, but otherwise he has done most of what he was paid to do.

He did this to him self he made a video about Tim schafer attacking him and broken age calling him a thief then you think he wont get any hate for this?  Dont feel bad at all he deserves it this time. He had alot of time to finish or at least start he literally has nothing after all these months?

why are you being so aggressive? you try making a series like project 7 and youll find out its not so easy. If he rushed it then it would turn out like crap. Its hard to think of a good story and script with only person doing everything. having like 1 day a week to work on it simply isnt enough and the whole do it during your free time excuse is dumb. We all need to relax and not actually do stuff. Yeah it sucks it got delayed but idk why people are being so aggressive over it like take a chill pill and sit down.

Then he should have been more clear people paid for it and its not happening. If he has no time (Which i dont believe is true he plays games and does little to mostly no editing its raw gameplay. I think he just uses his time poorly or does other things after hes done playing games on stream) then it should have never been on there.

The thing is, the summer was empty, but you decided to overbooked yourself with downtime games out of nowhere. The patreon choices and marathon I understand you had an obligation to play them, but did you really need to play stuff like Lego Batman 3, The Godfather, Metroid Prime and Just Cause 2? None of them even ended up being a success, I would even guarantee you that if you had decided to work on Project 7 and released a new episode instead of playing those downtime games, that one episode would've had better views than all of those downtime games combined.

Absolutely nobody can say that my criticism of Tim Schafer wasn't legit and that this is hypocritical if you just use simple logic: I was man enough to admit I made a miscalculation when it came to time/my capabilities to put out a project, PUBLICLY ADMITTED IT despite knowing there'd be some backlash disappointment, and applied the $250 to other goals people want to see. Schafer released a 2nd half of a game way later than promised, reused all the same shit from the first half, and it ended up being a turd - and kept the money too. He did EXACTLY what I'm against: made something bad JUST because he was obligated to do so. I refuse to put out something that I and viewers will feel is rushed/inferior just because I said I'd work on it. THAT'S the true sign of someone who doesn't care about their work.

I'm willing to admit my shortcomings and move towards positivity/things I know I can excel at, like focusing on whatever games I can in the next week before the busy gaming season starts. And I'm willing to take the hit for it - I know Patreon will probably be low this month as people who wanted Project 7 are probably going to withdraw some of their pledges. That's what you do when you're a responsible human rather than a hack who thinks they're above fault. I COULD HAVE JUST RUSHED OUT A SHITTY TEASER TRAILER but let's face it, those who actually want Project 7 to happen would probably rather wait and possibly get something good then rushed shit, which is what Schafer did.

So please, if you're going to make such comparisons, at least try harder.

EDIT: The best part about the morons saying "Patreon is a scam" is that they don't understand anything about it. Some are saying I raised $1250 for Project 7 (WRONG, it was $250 via simple math but they can't count) while others are saying $10k??? You REALLY have to be stupid if you think someone who barely brings in $1200 if that a month on Patreon raised $10k for Project 7.

And then you've got people DEMANDING I refund money - what money exactly? The $75 perk level was to participate in a creative work - NOT Project 7, but that was a suggestion. I've got 2 holiday specials coming up where these patrons will either be able to participate in gameplay, special segments or even skits. That was ALWAYS the plan (that's why I worded the perk that way), and PRoject 7 was just a hopeful wish if it did happen in time. So those perks will be fulfilled and besides KGhaleon I haven't been contacted by anyone who is upset with that perk level.

How exactly would you refund $250 to 165 or so patrons who didn't necessarily specifically pledge towards it? You can't refund goals, that's the whole point and that's why they're meant as "estimated rewards" rather than promised things you'll get. If I hadn't come through with a perk, that would be one thing and I fully agree that there would be refunds due. But a general goal level reward can't be properly refunded - applying it to the next month's goal (which tons of people have already told me they're looking forward to) is the best way to go about it, despite the fact I know I'm going to receive less in Patron funding because of it.

It's absolutely hilarious that "you know who" are trying to report me for Patreon abuse when none has taken place and once again, they just prove their ignorance of anything above a 5th grade level.

why are you being so aggressive? you try making a series like project 7 and youll find out its not so easy. If he rushed it then it would turn out like crap. Its hard to think of a good story and script with only person doing everything. having like 1 day a week to work on it simply isnt enough and the whole do it during your free time excuse is dumb. We all need to relax and not actually do stuff. Yeah it sucks it got delayed but idk why people are being so aggressive over it like take a chill pill and sit down.

because people paid for that, Phil kinda used Project 7 as a reason to create a Patron in the first place, go watch his video when he talked about the Patron stuff

now months later he kept promising, and now he did not put ANY work in P7, he knew he would not be able to but keep talking about it, sooooo

that $250 raised for that was used to reduce the other goals. so idk what the problem here is lol

That's not the case, at ALL, so if you got that impression I apologize because it was never the intention. Patreon is meant to do many things including:
-Allowing me to improve my content through hardware/software improvements (as you've seen with the green screen, microphone, soundproofing foam as well as more highly edited videos this year)
-Allowing me to not only play the "big releases" and always being a slave to daily views but instead to branch out and do more things I normally wouldn't (such as trying Minecraft, playing Persona 4, doing mini-marathons etc.) and even having the flexibility to skip some games I have no interest in (like Battlefield: Hardline among others this year which I did skip, and got some flak for)

Now in addition to all of that, I admit I'd hoped that Patreon would have allowed me more time to work on non-gaming projects more as well. That did not happen. I have to maintain a balance between my income on YouTube videos and Patron funding in order to keep the business afloat, and I simply couldn't have extended downtime from daily streaming/gameplay. In addition, TONS Of people were constantly asking me to "play X game" and actually complaining I haven't been playing enough! So it's obvious that the demand for me to play games was high, while the demand for non-gaming stuff wasn't nearly as strong.

The bottom line though: I didn't promise anything. The perk related to Project 7 was always worded in a way that it was CLEARLY uncertain whether it would happen, and that the perk would be fulfilled through other projects if it didn't. The July goal level was that I take time off to work on it - which for 2 weeks didn't happen, forcing me to cancel. It was pretty much the last-ditch effort to try and have enough time to work on the project, and even then it wasn't working. So I did the adult/mature thing and called it off despite knowing I'd get negative reactions.

It seems to me that people apparently had some kind of notion that I was promising Project 7. That NEVER happened, and it's pretty black-and-white if you actually go back and see what was said/listed on Patreon. But sometimes a group mentality/anticipation turns into a mob mentality of expectation, and that's what happened here. ESPECIALLY with that expectation it made more sense to cancel/postpone than rush out some crap.

It's not that people had some kind on notion that Project 7 was coming back, You have to admit you have pushed Project 7 in a big way. Every time you've mentioned Patreon you always bring up Project 7. That's where people are getting confused, Although I don't see what the problem is as you have clearly stated that Project 7 wasn't set in stone. I believe all the shouting is coming from the other camp if you know what I mean.

Then he should have been more clear people paid for it and its not happening. If he has no time (Which i dont believe is true he plays games and does little to mostly no editing its raw gameplay. I think he just uses his time poorly or does other things after hes done playing games on stream) then it should have never been on there.

Life happens. Stop being an aggressive jerk. Geesh. No need for that crap, man.
