Recommended Posts

Hello! Please post up your questions for the next episode of Ask the King here! It's tentatively scheduled for UPDATE: July 26, 2018!

I have moved Ask the King by 1 month. Why? So I can instead do a Hate Live podcast post-E3 to recap all the games, countdown the best/worst and more!

Hey Phil! Lately, I have seen you read reviews of upcoming games and sort of a question in reference to how you go about compiling your honest opinion when it comes to reviewing a video game or speaking about it while you play.

For better or for worse, whether it was for a game like God of War, Sea of Thieves, Extinction or going as far back as Murdered: Soul Suspect(In which you vehemently disagree with IGN on), you happen to be among the group who read reviews posted days prior to the game coming out. You have mentioned on Twitter, pre stream etc. about a game being heralded anywhere from excellent to poor before getting your taste of the game. Do you think it becomes somewhat of a detriment to formulating your opinion when it comes to reading someone else's take on a video game? By that I mean getting a take on a game(Ex. Random difficulty curve) and having that in the back of your mind when going blind towards a playthrough, sort of as a potential talking point to debunk or agree with when giving your honest thoughts on a video game? Having a preconceived notion on a game's strengths or problems from reading a review, does it effect your ability to formulate your own opinion or addressing something that hadn't yet been mentioned when giving your final thoughts on games?

It's for this very reason I stay away from reading reviews, not just from the spoilers but for allowing myself to formulate an opinion and to not have someone's bias or experience on a game review alter my thoughts heading into a game. I just think it's climbing a slippery rope when a lets player or even just a gamer allows someone else's experience or opinion on the game end up effecting their opinion on the game and how they play or react to a game.

Hey, Phil.

With Mega Man 11 coming out on October 2nd, would you be willing to play the past ten Mega Man games so that you can be prepared for MM11's release?

Also, which game in the classic series is your favorite, and what Robot Master is your favorite?

Thanks. :)

Hello, Phil. I would like to say that I HATE LEAKS, especially before E3 or further announcements for a game!

It feels great and exciting to watch a press conference , not knowing what to expect and get surprised with what is shown instead of saying, "Ah yes, there was a leak/rumour of that so I am not too surprised". Or watch a trailer for a game and a surprise character/feature is introduced.

Now, entire rosters (of a game) are leaked as well as full E3 plans. People go to the extent of data-mining demos and patches to reveal the full information.

You cannot escape these unless you disconnect from the Internet completely. If you intentionally ignore, you will get notifications from Twitter or see the news from the front page of YouTube or games news websites.

What is your opinion on this?

Phil,

You recently got into trouble for really laying into streamers who got State of Decay 2 early, saying it gives them an unfair advantage and it's preferential treatment. However, in certain cases you yourself have also started some playthroughs like Fallout 4 and Dark Souls 3 on XBOX ONE earlier than release date, AKA when most of us regular gamers get the game. So my question is can you elaborate on what your thought process was when deciding to play those games at an earlier time?

I know you get this question on stream from time to time and since it's not something that can be answered in only a few words, I though this would be a good chance to finally lay the issue to rest.

Hi Phil, I sent a couple of PMs about downloading Splinter Cell Conviction for free. Just wondering if you managed to do so after I messaged you. If not, just sending out a reminder so that you have it in your gaming library without shelling out the extra cash for replaying it. Last thing I want is for you to end up with another Dead Space 2 scenario for an old game. Keep up the good work with your playthroughs.

Hey Phil

Earlier this year my local video game retailer Grainger Games closed down with very little explanation apart from some news outlets discussing their financial ìssues and a few weeks later there were news reports talking about more high street stores having financial problems.

My question is

Do you think we are nearing the end of physical media, going into actual stores for shopping and physical money?

I think part of this is likely as more people are going digital when buying games, online stores are taking over and cryptocurrency like bitcoin are becoming more mainstream.

Phil,

Seeing as you've spent the majority of your life surrounded by video games, what was the one game you played that made you realise games could end up being respected as an art form within entertainment, as we know today? Were there certain aspects like narrative, graphics or characters that stuck in your mind and changed your outlook on how you viewed games from that point onwards?

Hey Phil, It’s Derich Congratulations in your First EVER Sponsored Stream!

I also have a movie question, This movie I loved watching so much:

- Have you ever watched the 1985 Film titled “The Breakfast Club” It’s about Five Highschool students enduring a Saturday detention at school.

My Follow-Up Question:

- When you were a kid in school did the teacher give you a lot of detentions for not completing the work? If Yes, Do you remember what did the teacher would make you do during detentions? Do Homework? Read Books? Listen to music? Sketch and Draw in your notebook? Fall fast asleep and doze off?

So I'm noticing a trend with recent competitive games. A lot of networks, i.e ESPN & Disney XD, are now broadcasting a lot of eSports competitive games & leagues, a la EVO & Overwatch League. While I'm happy these types of games are getting a wider audience of mainstream support, the problems I have with them are the drawbacks of having it on these networks compared to Twitch or any other streaming site. Best example being SFV (Well aware you don't care for SFV itself. But bear with me) on ESPN where not only was the commentary bland & 90% of it was just explaining what basic mechanics meant rather than actually commentating on what's happening in the match, but there were cases when competitors who played characters with revealing clothing, a la Cammy & R.Mika, were told to pick different skins for these characters because the normal ones weren't suitable for TV.

My Question: Does bringing these types of games to these types of TV networks do harm to how creative games can be made?

1 Hi Phil I am a longtime fan  and I was just wondering given everything that’s happened recently do you ever miss the way things used to be with the camera and    When this was just a hobby?

2  do you think you were under less stress when you did not have rely on this as your job?

Yo, Phil, what's up, hopefully you get some good news from Mitch soon (if you haven't already). My question is: what has been your favorite Patreon/sub event or marathon (and/or best hidden gem game you've experienced bc of an event), in the 3 years you've been doing them, so far? I've enjoyed them a lot, and there have been some great playthroughs that have come out of doing them, good stuff. Thanks, and here's to many more events/marathons in the future!

1. Are you going to play NBA 2K19? Only Drake Hasnotalent can beat this stacked Golden State team.

2. Was it right for Disney to fire James Gunn and should they rehire him?

3. How should the WWE solve the problem of wrestlers contracting CTE and other diseases from head trauma sustained in the ring?
